Nozomi & Steve: a wedding to remember

Nozomi and Steve hired me to photograph their special day at beautiful Lake Merritt's Camron Stanford House Garden. The beautiful wedding was witnessed by the couple's closest family and friends, and these are selected photos from that set.

Kanya's 1st Birthday

Here is a set of an adorable little girl having her big day!

Store is now open

We are now open for business with print sales. To start, we only have a couple of (password-protected) galleries but we will add more from previous and past clients, as well as an open gallery of our own photos we will make available for sale.

This past weekend, I travelled down to Hollywood with my day job and got busied up with our annual event. I did quite a few things, but my favorite has got to be photographing around the grounds as well as the concert that was a part of it. I'll upload a few photos soon, but if you're on Facebook, you can see them now: www.facebook.com/onekapamilyago.usa

Buy Prints - coming soon

Coming soon: clients will be able to view the full and private gallery of their photos (granted, in downgraded resolution) and order high-quality prints. We are still working on this, and hope to have it up soon starting with our most recent clients. Eventually, all images we've worked on will become available for sale as well as our own general/stock photos.

These are some of the maternity photos from a shoot on August 13, 2011 in Half Moon Bay. Our gorgeous mama-to-be (again) is really blooming, isn't she? :) The other person in some of the photos is her supportive sister. Nothing like sisterly love. Had a blast doing this set!

Now you can view our PLANS!

We added a new tab to this site. For those who prefer to know how much we charge right off the bat, well, go and take a look at our PLANS. If you want to hire us yet these rates might still be too high for your very low budget, go ahead and contact us because if we're available on a day you need us, we could adjust some things and work around your budget. Otherwise, everything is straight to the point. No hidden fees. Post-editing and any shipping fees are included in every plan.

FB page is back

After a few days of pondering, I'm not going to use FB photo albums too much except to share teasers. So there was no need to create additional albums per photo session if they were just for teasing. We will, however, create a separate album for our designs.

Speaking of: the design side of PanFocus will now have its own blogfolio. PanFocusStudios.com will remain to be our photography blog. The site will remain open as we do the changes. The new URL for PanFocus Designs will be announced when it's ready. Our Zazzle store will also migrate along with the design blogfolio since our designs are more associated with Zazzle items.

FB page temporarily closed

Our Facebook page was temporarily zoned off for admin-only viewing while we fix up the albums and re-position who and what are all about. We've spent so much time doing that on our website here, but now it's time to pay a little attention to Facebook.

I've added a new section to this blogfolio: links to related articles on photography and design. See the sidebar for these links (more coming!)

In other wonderful news, we are now on Google+. This is such a great way to meet photographers around the world! For the time being, we are only using it strictly to network with other photographers, designers, and like-minded visual folks but any one is welcome to add us to their circle(s). Facebook is still our turn-to social networking site for reaching out to the masses. But when the road turns a different direction and Google+ becomes the new Facebook, anything can happen. We are just evolving along.

Give our FB page a Like

At random times, we will look for a band or family or individual to do a free shoot with, but this only applies to those we are connected to on Facebook. "Like" our page now to get future notices.

Any bands that like us are absolutely welcome to post their shows on our page. If we are available and looking for something to do on the night of your show, we may just come out and take some pictures for you. There are no complicated terms to the pictures except they will always belong to us, and we will at most tag you on our FB page and your band will have a gallery on our website. Also, you need not keep bugging us about your show-- please just post each show once. The offer will only be good for live performances (no portfolio shots), and if you can get us in for free, we will throw in a bonus something.

We have shifted the business side of things to fit photography in our busy lives, and we are now focusing on clients with limited budgets only. However, the only catch is, you have to book us early to ensure our availability.

NOTE: This is NOT a contest. You do not have to like our page, you do not need to be on FB. We are using FB as a tool, as a way to communicate, and if you want to share your show or event with us, that's fine. It doesn't guarantee anything, and it doesn't mean you're entered into anything. We abide by these guidelines.

Children in Portraits

Our future relies on the children of today; let us give them a positive childhood with the hope that they continue that to positive adulthood. Here is a mix of children's photos I've shot in my photography journey.

Bess & Zaldy | Wedding Photographer | San Francisco, Ca

We had an impromptu shoot a few days ago for a small, private wedding, and Egan took lead on photos while I had the record button pressed for video.

This is the second wedding we have done any work for. I'd like to do more! PanFocus Studios is offering special rates for weddings and other significant family events. There is no deadline for these rates since we need more work in this field to build up the portfolio.

Lights at night

What makes night photography fun is all the lights!!! Don't be surprised -- we will be adding more photos here.

Events

Concerts, baptisms, birthdays, parties -- pictures that weren't enough to have their own gallery. This gallery is a lump of my best event photos.

Humanbuilt

Man is an intelligent form of life, despite unpopular beliefs. Some project anger against humans for destroying the environment or for being less-than-civil in society, or for other reasons. But let's always look at the big picture: without man, you wouldn't have a computer. You can't be so self-loathing that you're against everything on earth. Man is what makes many things possible for you, including the construction of bridges so you can cross, design of buildings so you have a place to work, installation of towers so you have signals, and many more. This gallery is a collection of photos that show these things that man has built.

Earth, Moon, Sun

This gallery is a celestial and geophysical showcase of what our lenses can see. Some are of nature as it is on earth, some are breathtaking shows of what the universe can do for us on earth. Atleast, what our lens can see.

Food

Food comes in many different shapes, colors and sizes. Flavors are sensational. Food photography is trending, and why shouldn't it be? Most of us who are connected to the Internet have access to cameras, and we share what we eat. Here are some that I have enjoyed. In some cases, I don't always enjoy the food. But I took a photo because the colors captivated my eyes more than they did my tastebuds. Either way, I was fed.

Animal Planet

This planet is full of life, thanks in large to animals. I will continue to add more to this gallery as I go. From animals that live in Redwood Shores to those that are exhibited in the zoo. It would be great to go on an African safari and capture animals in their most natural habitats. Until then, all I can share with you are animals that were brought in close contact to humans.

Faces

Here is a collection of faces. As I collect more, this here is something to start you with. Faces are what represent us at first glance; they say to not judge a book by its cover, but we do that anyway. It may not be the most important feature, but let's love our faces and the beauty it DOES represent. There is no ugly face in the world.

Slowly building

Recently, I obtained a EIN# for PanFocus Studios. And I'm also in the process of applying for a seller's permit. Slowly but surely, we're growing up.

I haven't had much chance to take photos lately, but I did try to do a couple of photowalks this week during my lunchbreaks from work. Unfortunately, San Carlos and Belmont are both dull towns for photography during the work week, so I must say "I went out photographing, and all I got was this flower shot."

My fulfillment with these photowalks is to simply practice and review my unedited photos. Being stuck in Silicon Valley all day is a challenge, and one day, I hope to make something interesting out of nothing.
There is a Union Cemetary deep in Redwood City that I've been meaning to go to, but it's just a bit of a far drive for me to take during a 1-hour break. I'm not sure what I can do with cemetary photography, and I'm too scared to look up photos tonight because it's midnight and I'm not in the mood to read anything related to the dead.

Photography workshop

It's been a very busy last 2 weeks for me that I haven't had the chance to share how my experience was at the Capturing True Emotions Photography Workshop was.

It was a daylong workshop which consisted of 4 hours of compressed tips and advice on ISO, shutter speeds, f-stops, light metering and compositions. Then 2 hours of a photo safari which I didn't join because I had a last minute rendezvous with my kids who were hanging out in the city with their dad.

It was a good workshop, I think, as there were many who were from all levels of photography. I picked up new tips and it was refreshing to hear a lot of what I already knew from a professional photographer. If anything, to be reassured of technical bits I've learned from practice, my own reading and my husband, was well worth my time.

Now the only challenge is: to take better photos.

I would like to take another workshop that talks about lighting: both natural/outdoors and artificial/indoors. I use a slave flash that works well for what I need to do, but I would like to learn more about it in a workshop setting.

Oh, and that rendezvous with my kids resulted in me being the only parent paparazzi at the playground, snapping away at my own kids (not the others). Here are a couple of the ones I like:

This is the second wedding we have done any work for. I'd like to do more! PanFocus Studios is offering special rates for weddings and other significant family events. There is no deadline for these rates since we need more work in this field to build up the portfolio.

More photos will be uploaded to our Facebook and Flickr. In the meantime, here are a couple of our favorites.

sputterdoll.com has launched

I used to run and operate sputterdoll.com, a website for a band that is very close to my heart because it was my baby in the last decade.

For the past couple of years or more, the website became useless and the domain just pointed to our Myspace page. But as of yesterday, it's back with information on our history and related/future plans.

Please go take a look at it, and in memory of all things good in our lives, let's give it a toast. Or you know, just check it out for now.

Golda + the Guns, The Savages | Concert Photographer | Risque Lounge, San Francisco

We captured moments of rock n roll last night, at a club called Risque Lounge on Maiden Lane in San Francisco. I came out in support of my friend Golda and her band (Golda + the Guns), but since they played last, we got to see the entire show from the beginning. The bands were good, although not my cup of tea. I am personally more into punk shows because I love the vibe. Also, I'm not really into cover bands. But hey, they all did put on a good show and we took pictures along the way. We would like to come back and see more shows at Risque! Next time we go, we will post up the event beforehand here so you can hang out with us.

Gems from a smartphone camera

I don't really like carrying a bulky camera all the time as much as I'm okay with carrying my phone around, so I end up taking a lot of those spur of the moment beauties on it. Here is one of them. You can see the rest on Facebook.

I see a lot of breathtaking scenes of nature from the hill I live on. The teaser above looked like there was a divider in the sky, doesn't it? Now keep an eye out on our mobile photo album on Facebook, because it's very likely these rare scenes will only be immortalized with a smartphone.

Help for Japan and... we're on Yelp

Just a quick note.

I've added a widget on this site that you can use to make a donation for Japan's relief efforts. You don't have to use it, but in case you do, it's there. Just helping to make it more accessible. Don't you worry, it's all coordinated by the organization MERCY CORPS. They help all around the world.

In other news, PanFocus Studios is now on Yelp! If we've provided you any of our services before, please leave a review! And as always, we're on Facebook. Go "Like" our page and let us know what you think of our work there too.

SF Photowalk

Photowalk | San Francisco, CA

Created with flickr slideshow.
I spent this rare day off from work walking MILES of San Francisco streets and hills. Armed with 2 cameras, I spent more walking and sightseeing than actually taking any photos. For one, I really wanted to capture people, but there weren't that many out today! I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the tsunami warning that kept people indoors on this otherwise beautiful day.

I hitched a ride into the city with my husband, who works near Pier 39. We parked at Stockton/Northpoint. My first stop was Safeway -- I had to get breakfast (mac n cheese). I then walked to Jack Early Park, where I was told by my husband there's a 180 degree view of the bay. However, the gate to the park was locked. A passerby had asked if there was a park up there and noticing my cameras, asked if I was there to take pictures of the tsunami. I explained that I was just out and about for no real reason. Next, I walked down to Pier 39 and realizing it was still very early, there weren't that many people at all.

It was quite empty that there weren't anything interesting to take photos of. I walked all the way to the dock where the USS Pampanito is at, then up to Fisherman's Wharf (and stopped at a nearby Walgreens for water). It got boring at the wharf, so I walked up Stockton Street, and ended up in North Beach. I was able to capture some neat architectural stuff on the way, such as an orange-painted apartment building and a couple of others on the way. Unfortunately, Sts. Peter Paul & Mary Church was being renovated so its beautiful exterior was covered up. I still took a picture of it.

I then looked at the Coit Tower from the church, and decided to defeat Telegraph Hill. I walked up the hill, the stairs, more stairs, more hill... GOD IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE, even for me, to make it. It was my first time to be that near the tower, so I looked around but didn't feel like paying the fare to take the elevator to the top. I did look out as much as I could, into the bay. Now it was around that time, based on my text message to my husband to inform him where I was, that the tsunami wave had entered the bay. Too bad I didn't know it at the time! Someone in Emeryville was able to capture a beautiful picture of the waves coming in, which I'm sure, I would have seen from Coit Tower had I only expected it.

After Coit, my feet took me through the southeast part of North Beach, nothing interesting there. I was tempted to go directly to Financial District but knowing I was going later, I decided to walk towards back to my husband so we could meet for lunch. I took the long way back along Embarcadero, and again, nothing interesting there.

I made it to Pier 39 and went window shopping for a while, since I got back a bit too early for lunch. In one of the stores, I got asked again if I was around to take pictures of the tsunami (maybe I should have just gone to the coast instead???) Husband and I met shortly after, and had a quick lunch at a nearby Boudin's.

After walking him back to work and a restroom break, I tackled Stockton St again on my way to meet a friend, Bern, who works in the Financial District. She ate her lunch while I drank my Cafe Freddo, and we walked around for a bit as I took a few more photos of downtown buildings. After parting with her, I bumped into my nephew on the way to meet another friend -- Lou -- who worked a couple of blocks away. A few minutes of chit chat, I went off again without a plan, stopped by St. Patrick's Church down the street to say a prayer. Before leaving, I took a photo from the back of the church. On my way again, I ended up at Union Square. I decided that I didn't want to walk anymore so I called my husband to just pick me up wherever I'd be when he gets off work. I did walk around the area, took a picture of some cable cars lined up at Powell St, a picture of Macy's, and contemplated going into St. Francis Hotel to take the elevator up to get a view of Union Square. Instead, I took a long break at Union Square, put away one of my cameras, and just left the 40D out.

It got surprisingly boring so despite the stiff that my legs became, I limped my way to Chinatown via Stockton St. And all of a sudden, there were photos to take! Chinatown became the highlight of my photowalk, even though, again, there weren't that many people out. I can safely say so because I didn't bump into anybody like usual. Well, I braved it out and walked my way back to my husband's office. I didn't realize how small Chinatown was because a short walk later, I was back in North Beach. I passed by the same block of trees from earlier that I took photos of, but I took more photos of them again to make sure I got something good. I was mostly looking for contrast in the shadows.

As I got to my destination, I waited on a bench outside of my husband's building and a man noticed my camera so we had a brief talk about Nikon vs. Canon (he was thinking of switching to Canon). I told him I've never really used a Nikon so I can't speak for it but that my Nikon friends love it.

So that was my day. I haven't had the chance to look at the pictures I took because as soon as we got home, I passed out on the couch. I skipped dinner and putting the kids to bed. But I did have to get up, at 1am to have my dinner and do some web updates for work (www.balitangamerica.tv). It's now 3:30 am and I have a pounding headache, so I will leave you with this...

Here is my map with my sloppily traced trail of the streets I walked. I will post some pictures on Facebook sometime next week.

San Francisco on my CF card

I had to request tomorrow off from work because I really need a day just to myself (no kids, no housework, no work) so I'm planning to spend this rare treat capturing San Francisco. I'll mostly be in the Pier 39 area, and depending how far I can walk, may venture to Chinatown and Financial District.

The last time I had any time to do this was before marriage, before kids, and before I had a DSLR. You bet your bottom dollar I'm going to savior the day.

I'll be sure to upload worthy photos so you better "Like" us on Facebook if you haven't already.

Happy Friday to all!

Seasons MarketPlace

I work for The Filipino Channel (my day job) and today we had celebrated the grand opening of our TFC Lounge at Seasons MarketPlace in Milpitas, CA. I had taken photos (not for PanFocus) of the event and the meet-n-greet with the hosts of two of our locally-produced shows. It was a fun time, and if you're in the area, go check out our lounge. You can even enjoy some of our programming while you're hanging out (there's a TV) or take pictures with the props. Though this was a non-PanFocus event, I thought I'd share it.

Could this be an "evil" want?

I have not had much opportunity to be out at night and improve my light trail photography skills. However, there is one picture I would (like?) to be able to capture. Yet, even just sharing what it is, makes me nervous for one might think I want it to happen so bad just to fulfill what I want out of it. Trust me that I don't want it to happen to anyone. But I have never seen a picture of it being done yet...

If you have, I really feel the need to see it.

Does anyone out there have a light trail photo involving a car accident? As I've said I don't feel proud about wanting to capture this, but it's something that, as a photographer, I would like to see. I don't mean to make art out of someone's misfortune, but this is strictly a photography inquiry.

PanFocus Projects!

Aside from taking photos for our lovely customers, we're also coming up with projects to give ourselves.

Right now we have a couple planned out. Either we'll put them out on a book or have it featured in this blog. What do you think? We do love the traditional use of print media.

The first project is themed Girls Without Makeup. The second project will be a series of Photos You Must Take.

More details later! These will both be ongoing and simultaneous. It will keep us (or just me, Rio) very busy.

But I'm looking forward to it!

Tony/Stephanie/Paolo pictures!

This Saturday, I will be meeting with one of my favorite families on the planet: the Daquipa/Pepitone folks! They chose Lake Merritt in Oakland as the site to have their portraits taken because it is a special place for them. I am looking forward to clicking away! Their little Paolo is a fun kid, and I hope he lets me take good shots of him.

Let's just hope the springtime weather lasts through Saturday for now.

We have a lot of projects lining up!! Our little bunch of team all have dedicated full-time day jobs yet we do this in the midst of our busy lives. This is what we're about!

In my words: what photography means to me

Ever since I was a toddler, I was obsessed with photographs. Yes -- my very first memories were from when I was 2 or 3, and I recall begging my parents to take down a shoebox of pictures which they put away on top of their tall cabinet. When I was 5, I received one of my favorite birthday presents: my parents gave me a red photo album with pictures of me (as a baby) and my family. I still have the album -- it's ratty now, but it's still around. But over the years, I had updated the pictures in it. Not all of them, but a few.

Between then and now, my interest in photography wasn't present but I have always been close to visuals and images. I majored in Graphic Design and focused on that and web design during college. I've had toy cameras as well as fun cameras, but I never owned a SLR. I've used my dad's SLR for projects, but only because I was required to. I've bought point and shoot digital cameras that I used for years just to be able to capture images for my design projects. But for whatever reason, I never thought about taking photography seriously, although it was always there.

I'm not quite sure how I decided on it, but I was talking to a friend about music and photography, and somewhere from that conversation, I wanted my first dSLR. He sold me his, and I slowly picked up how to use it. I stuck with it for 3 years and then I bought a more advanced body as I begin to get more comfortable with my skills for a passion that must have always been inside of me.

It's not about just being artsy or doing it because my friends do it. As I look back at my photograph obsession, I realize that pictures do not have to be perfectly composed or edited for the viewer. Pictures ARE personal -- to the photographer, or the subject. It captures moments in time for us to look back at later on. I realized this when I saw that one of my cousins was tagged (by someone I don't know) in very old pictures from back in the day before I was even born. In the picture, I see my uncle and familiar walls of a very old apartment building that was a part of my childhood. People whose fashions matched what was that of the 70s. I even see a part of my dad's young face, half blocked by someone's head at a party. The colors aren't sharp, neither are the subjects. But each of the photos captured such moments that will never happen again.

As every year passes, every decades close, moments are happening. But cameras are not always available to capture them. Each time there is a camera, capturing the moment WILL mean something later. There are more moments to be experienced than there will ever be cameras or photographers in our lifetime.

So with that said, I hope that photographers continue to work with each other and not feel there's nothing for you to photograph. There is something to be captured wherever you are, whenever you have a camera. I can't always carry my dSLR with me, but I have a fancy phone with a very sophisticated camera. I make sure that it's always available for times I need to capture something. A picture, to me, really doesn't need to be snapped from the latest model. a
